Curia of Sulmona
CELESTINE V
2010

Born at the request of the Curia of Sulmona, the work pays homage to Celestine V, a symbolic figure of Abruzzo: a hermit, pope for a few months, and known for his decision to renounce the pontificate out of consistency with his ideals.
The sculpture depicts him in a pared-down manner, wearing simple clothing and bare feet, as he emerges forcefully from the block of Pacentro stone.
The hard and compact material retains rough edges supporting the figure.
The work expresses determination, freedom, and fidelity to one's ethics.
